Aminul Islam asks ICC to freeze BCB funding

Aminul Islam Bulbul has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to freeze funding for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, a BCB source confirmed Cricbuzz on Thursday.

Cricbuzz learnt that Aminul, the former BCB president, sent a near 14-page letter to the ICC earlier this week where he questioned board's legality. He also demanded to be reinstated as board president, while requesting the ICC to not provide the BCB with any financial assistance, a key component to run the board and develop cricket in the country.

"Yes, he (Aminul) requested ICC to freeze their funding for Bangladesh," the source confirmed to this website, adding that the ICC notified BCB regarding the letter. The source, who was well aware of this development, also added that the BCB replied to the ICC after a discussion with its legal team.

Aminul could not be reached on his phone and did not respond to a text either when asked for clarification regarding the letter and his position.

The National Sports Council dissolved the previous Aminul-led board on April 7 over what it described as large-scale irregularities in the last board election, following the report submitted by the probe committee. On the same day, former national skipper Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the head of an 11-member ad-hoc committee and was given the responsibility to hold the election in 90 days.

The election was then held on June 7 and Tamim was elected the BCB president unopposed for a four-year term.

The election took place as the Bangladesh government called for it under the interim body in April after dissolving the previous elected body under Aminul on the back of a probe committee report that found him and his board members being involved in corruption.

The NSC formed the committee after Tamim led a request for investigation into last year's BCB elections, claiming that 50 out of 76 clubs in the capital supported the call for a probe. The NSC then insisted that they will take a call on the BCB's future based upon the report prepared by the probe committee and took the decision to remove Aminul based upon their observation.

Aminul replaced Faruque Ahmed as the president of BCB on May 30, 2025 after the National Sports Council (NSC) removed Faruque as their councillor, and eventually also removed him from the post of president. Faruque took over as board president in August 2024, following the exit of long-serving BCB president Nazmul Hasan. Nazmul went into hiding following the student movement in July that saw them oust the Awami League government, who ruled the country for around 15 years.

Aminul, who was working as a development officer in the ICC when he was approached by the former Yunus-led government, returned to Bangladesh with the primary goal of holding a transparent election.

Initially aiming to return to the ICC after the election, he changed his mind and took part in the election instead, citing that he wasn't ready to leave without completing his unfinished work.

However, Aminul could not realize his dream after being removed from his post as BCB president on corruption charges. He came under the scanner following widespread allegations against him following the general election in Bangladesh in February earlier this year.
